The Only Constant Thing Is Change

c-30 c-60, c-90 GO!

I came back to this point several times throughout my keynote at D-Fest on Friday – remember format wars?? Well, I extrapolated back to the cylinder player, the 78rpm disc, the cassette, the reel to reel! De-bunked the whole idea that cassette mix tapes were going to destroy the business – because they didn’t! and then went on to try and get people to think about the real idea of success and what that might mean before they invested hours, weeks, years and tens of thousands of hours and dollars in a dream that very well might turn out to be the synopsis for SAW IV.

We ALL (not everyone at D-Fest but everyone in general) got lost for a while in the scientific freq response parameters of different formats to record with: 2” tape, digital……which sounds better….which is easier….I don’t remember anyone asking the question “which format might enable a songwriter or producer to create a long lasting, vibe filled, thought provoking legacy of amazing songs that MOVE people and affect their lives???” too big a question??? No-one has ever said, maaaaan, what a DRAG that Jimi Hendrix didn’t have pro-tools……or am I just not subscribing to the correct train spotter hi end studio blogs???

ANYWAY, D-fest was a blast, it’s a triumph of wills when these things come off well – there are so many many things that can go wrong that it is only the people with the foresight to dis-able the many mnay problems that ARE coming towards you AND that have the intestinal fortitude to deal with it all when the shit does hit the fan…..CONGRATULATIONS to all concerned Tom and Angie you fucking ROCK!……..they managed to sort out a homeland security escort so that I could do my Tour:Smart event and still make the last plane out of town on Saturday………did I mention WHY this was necessary? Well, this last week saw the birth of our fourth amazing boy…….Cole Vincent Atkins born on July 23rd 2008…….for a few hours there I wasn’t going anywhere and, talk about re-defining the idea of success………

Heres a pic of Cole and mother.

I love the name that we chose together, his middle name made me cry when I announced it at D-fest but, I know in the furure, its going to make me smile every time that behaviour over the line of acceptability necessitates the use of the middle name. Oh yeah

Lots of GREAT GREAT stuff going on

Peace love respect and peace and love
